Song Spotlight: Connie Francis - Pretty Little Baby

Randomly resurging over 60 years after its release, Connie Francis’ ‘Pretty Little Baby’ has us all going goo-goo! Come along as we delve into the wholesome track.

The first woman to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart, American pop singer and actress Connie Francis boasts many hits over her career — including ‘Stupid Cupid’, ‘Lipstick on Your Collar’, ‘Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool’, and ‘Who’s Sorry Now’ — but it’s one of her lesser-known tunes that’s swept up the internet.

First appearing on the B-side of her 1962 album, Connie Francis Sings “Second Hand Love”, ‘Pretty Little Baby’ was not a major success at the time of its release, was never issued as a single, and, according toBillboard, was one of 40 songs she recorded during a marathon four-day session in August 1961. Its appeal was seemingly nothing out of the ordinary, but flash forward 63 years, and a now-retired 87-year-old Francis is seeing her song trending.

Reaching number one on both TikTok’s Viral 50 and Top 50 charts, the platform’s users have been using the song to lip-sync to its feel-good lyrics whilst showcasing their children, pets, and stylish outfits — with even Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian jumping on the trend. Talk about an It-girl stamp of approval!

Revealing in an interview with People that she “didn’t even remember the song”, Francis describes the easy-listening track’s newfound intergenerational popularity as “an amazing feeling”, and theorises the sweet song’s surge being due to it being "innocent and pure” in “a time when everything is in such chaos”. We think she might have hit the nail on the head here!

Catchy and cutesy, this track really is a serotonin-boosting sing-along that has us all warm and fuzzy. ‘Pretty Little Baby’, we’re so in love with you!
